Light Among the Clouds

Once during a flight that I was on from San Francisco to Los Angeles, the plane hit turbulence and suddenly dropped. Drinks went flying, flight attendants grabbed for something to hold on to, and gasps of surprise filled the air. I was terrified. After that flight, I was afraid of flying. I would get nervous, feel claustrophobic, and have to talk myself out of hyperventilating throughout any flight that I took. So when my husband informed me that we would be flying across the United States to New York for a special meeting for work, I was not thrilled. I didn’t know how I was going to survive the flight. The day came and I anxiously buckled myself into the seat. The plane took off and my knuckles were white as I gripped the armrest and wished the flight was over. I prayed hard that we would be safe and not crash. About halfway through the flight, I was tense and miserable, especially whenever we hit a bit of turbulence. Then a thought started to form in my mind. The picture that it created was a picture of God holding the plane in His hands. Immediately the tension in my shoulders decreased and I felt peace start to grow within me. More thoughts came to me. I felt words go through my mind that went something like this, “God is in charge and whether you live or die or crash or fly is up to Him. Trust Him!” And so, I did. I was at peace for the rest of the flight and ever since. Now, if I ever start to feel tense on a flight, I picture His hands holding the plane. I am so full of gratitude that Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ care enough about me to have comforted me in this way.
